Accompanied by the bird-catcher Papageno, Prince Tamino sets out on a fairy-tale journey to free his beloved Pamina, the daughter of the Queen of the Night, who is allegedly being held captive in Sarastro’s kingdom. But when he arrives, he discovers a surprisingly radiant world filled with magic, where the young couple are initiated into great human values – a poetic symbol of the triumph of light over darkness.

Although the premiere on 30th September 1791 did not initially arouse great enthusiasm among audiences, the opera quickly became a public favourite. In October, it was performed almost daily at Vienna’s suburban theatre. That THE MAGIC FLUTE is now among the best-known and most frequently performed works in opera history is beyond question. But what is it that makes Mozart’s final stage work so magical – and so popular?

THE MAGIC FLUTE explores timeless themes such as self-discovery and coming of age, friendship and love, good and evil, wisdom and reason. In the end, love triumphs over numerous obstacles and dangers. In the music, Mozart combines elements and characters from both serious and comic opera: the Queen of the Night’s arias, with their dazzling coloratura, stand alongside Papageno’s catchy, folk-like melodies.
