In his working notes, Hervé Koubi describes SOL INVICTUS as follows: »The universe, the passing of the seasons—how do we fit into these vast, swirling, ever-changing spaces? This space, linked to the meaning of our lives, is bounded by its beginning and its end; our fate is the same within it, and that is why—connected to it and confronted by it—I dance.« For the choreographer, love and dance are part of the same indivisible whole that constitutes life. And so SOL INVICTUS is meant to be a spark—as radiant as a life full of joy in dancing... together. But what does »dancing together« mean? The answer to that remains a secret for Koubi. What he does know, however, is that he wants to tell a story of love, mutual aid, solidarity, light, and connection. Dance brings people together and unites them. Dance transcends geographical boundaries. In this choreography, Koubi also blurs the boundaries between different styles of ballet, street dance, and acrobatics—together with 15 dancers hailing from five continents.

The doctor of pharmacy with Algerian roots decided to pursue a career as a dancer and choreographer and to study in Aix-Marseille. In 2010, he founded his first company in Algeria. He selected 12 dancers from Algeria, Morocco, and Burkina Faso through an audition to develop his new work with them. None of the talented dancers—mostly hip-hop and street dancers—had ever performed on stage before. In 2015, Hervé Koubi created LES NUITS BARBARES, his homage to the North African peoples of the Mediterranean region and his perspective from within that region.
