In RHYTHM & FLOW, hip-hop dancers, parkour athletes, and pole artists meet musicians on stage. What happens in this “CultureClash”? – A performance that explores attraction and conflict.

We witness an open jam session on stage: a dancer challenges a musician; they speed up the beat and feel the adrenaline surge. They throw themselves wholeheartedly into each other’s flow. This evening is an endless cycle of ecstasy, devotion, and letting go.

The set design—a labyrinth of pipes and poles—is the perfect playground for the encounter between these disciplines. Choreographer Marco Gerris allows these disciplines to merge and then drift apart again. As you watch, you almost get the impression that energy is flowing through the pipes like a liquid heartbeat, one that even the audience cannot escape.

The show has won multiple awards, including the Zwaan in the “most impressive dance production” category and the Johannes Vermeer Award for choreographer Marco Gerris.

ISH is a collective of people who think differently, free from conventions and restrictions, united by the belief that boundaries are meaningless. So there’s no doubt that the work of the ISH Dance Collective is hard to classify. For freerunners, a wall isn’t an obstacle but a step upward; for street soccer players, a simple field becomes an arena. They’re inspired by the movement that arises when you step outside the box to discover the unifying vision of an open perspective.

At the theater, they bring together different outside worlds. In the studio, breakdancers, ballet dancers, actors, voguers, urban athletes, musicians, orchestras, and spoken-word artists come together. In the audience, they encourage a mix of different age groups, backgrounds, and genders. They want everyone to feel at home at the theater, even those who have never been there before.
