Lucía Lacarra Ballet (Spain)

Dates & Tickets

The rise of artificial intelligence has changed the way we live in the world.

Between promises of progress and shadows of uncertainty, an ambivalent landscape emerges in which the human and the artificial are intertwined. A.I. (Amalur Infinity) positions itself at this threshold and offers an experience that does not aim to provide answers, but rather raises questions about our consciousness, our emotions, and our very nature.

A.I. is a dance performance that integrates laser light and new technologies to give artificial intelligence a theatrical form. Through a collaborative choreography of light and the body, the work reflects on the conscious use of technology and reclaims it as an artistic tool in the service of emotion, identity, and humanity.

Lucía Lacarra and Matthew Golding are already familiar faces to Bonn audiences: they most recently impressed them in 2024 with LOST LETTERS. That was the first production by the dance company founded by Lucía Lacarra, the Lucía Lacarra Ballet. The company is committed to upholding the highest standards of artistic excellence and inspiring the younger generation to embrace dance.

Born in Zumaia in the Spanish part of the Basque Country, the dancer studied at Victor Ullate’s school in Madrid. She also took on her first professional role in his neoclassical company, the Ballet Victor Ullate. In 1994, she joined the Ballet National de Marseille under Roland Petit and moved to the San Francisco Ballet under Helgi Tomasson in 1997 as a principal dancer. From the 2002–03 season through the 2015–16 season, she was a principal dancer with the Bavarian State Ballet. There, she danced all the major roles in the classical repertoire, such as Giselle, Medora, Nikiya, Juliet, and Catherine.

Among the roles created for her in Munich are Sophie in Die silberne Rose (Graeme Murphy), Ariel in Der Sturm (Jörg Mannes), Odette in Once Upon An Ever After, and the French Ballerina in Série Noire (Terence Kohler); key roles were also created for her in Century Rolls (Davide Bombana), Viola Concerto/II (Martin Schläpfer), and Spiral Pass (Russell Maliphant). Among Lacarra’s numerous awards are the Nijinsky Award in the “Best Dancer” category (2002), the Prix Benois de la Danse (2003) for her portrayal of Tatyana in Cranko’s Onegin, and the Premio Nacional de Danza (2005), awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Culture. In 2008, Dr. Thomas Goppel, Bavarian State Minister for Science and the Arts, conferred upon her the title “Bavarian Chamber Dancer”. Beginning in 2016, Lucia Lacarra served as a permanent guest soloist with the Theater Dortmund, where she also co-directed, together with Matthew Golding, the dance evenings Fordlandia (2020) and In The Still Of The Night (2021). With the last of these, she won the “Best Female Performer in Dance” category at the Premios Max de las Artes Escénicas, awarded in 2022 by the Fundación SGAE.
