The final days of Jesus, told from an unfamiliar perspective: JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR does not place Jesus himself – celebrated as the Messiah – at the centre, but deliberately chooses the perspective of his closest confidant and later betrayer, Judas. Alongside the veneration of Jesus, suspicion grows, and even his inner circle comes under increasing pressure and begins to question events critically: is Jesus truly the promised Messiah, or simply a man overwhelmed by the expectations of his followers?
In JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice combine the biblical narrative of the Passion with elements of pop and rock music, creating one of the most influential rock musicals of the 20th century. A year before its Broadway premiere in 1971, the concept album of the same name was released in the United Kingdom, featuring Ian Gillan, lead singer of the legendary rock band Deep Purple, and bringing the music of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR to international audiences even before the stage premiere. The musical was later adapted for film several times and won numerous awards.
Following the triumph of the musical HAIRSPRAY at Theater Bonn, the team led by director Erik Petersen returns in the 2026/27 season for the rock opera JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR.
