Summer at a country house. Konstantin and the woman he loves, Nina, are getting a play ready for performance. It is intended to revolutionise theatre and usher in a new era in art. Konstantin is the author and director of the play and Nina, its protagonist, dreams of becoming an actress. In the audience are his mother, the famous actress Arkadina, and her lover, the successful author Trigorin. Even before the performance is over, Arkadina starts making fun of her son’s meagre talent, publicly and without holding back. Konstantin loses his temper and an argument breaks out. Over the next few days and weeks, the situation becomes increasingly unbearable: Nina is attracted to Trigorin, Trigorin is flattered by this, Arkadina grows more and more jealous, and Konstantin is plunged into an existential crisis, both personally and artistically... A play about two generations of artists fundamentally different in the way they think, and about a group of people who seek happiness in art and love. No easy matter, then or now.
