12+ ca. 3hrs, one intervalBerlin, 1927: through a newspaper advertisement, six young men come together to form a vocal ensemble destined to conquer the world with its distinctive sound: the Comedian Harmonists. Their voices elevate even the silliest pop song, their brilliant arrangements transform even the kitschiest ironic love ballad. Sold-out halls, gramophone records, film contracts – the six gentlemen in tailcoats become the stars of the Weimar Republic.
Then comes 1933. With the Nazis’ seizure of power, the ensemble begins to fall apart, for three of its members are Jewish. What friendship, art and shared success had held together begins to shatter under the pressure of exclusion, performance bans and a society in free fall.
Director Thomas Winter weaves documentary material and timeless hits into a moving music-theatre evening, drawing on Eberhard Fechner’s legendary film portraits, in which the artists themselves look back on their rise, glamour and downfall. It is a story about art, friendship and the destructive power of National Socialism.
