A classic that remains disturbingly relevant today, George Orwell’s 1984 depicts a world in which control is total and omnipresent: thoughts, language, and even truth are monitored and manipulated. The novel raises timeless questions about power, fear, and responsibility, and about how much freedom people are willing to give up.

Orwell’s 1984 follows Winston, a low-ranking member of the ruling Party, living in Oceania, a state that claims absolute authority over truth itself. His work consists of »correcting« historical records and media in line with official doctrine. Yet within him grows a quiet awareness of the lies that structure everyday life, along with a longing for genuine connection and freedom. Winston dares to cross the line of what is permitted: he begins to think independently and to experience forbidden love. In doing so, he enters a dangerous space between conformity and resistance.

Since its publication, 1984 has often been read as a commentary on the present. The questions it raises remain urgent: how much freedom do we give up out of fear—of punishment, instability, or economic insecurity? How much do we give up for the sake of convenience, distraction, and comfort in an overwhelming world? How easily can perception be shaped by permanent crises and selective information? And what remains of our beliefs when they are constantly tested?

1984 reminds us that even under conditions of extreme oppression, resistance remains both possible and necessary—not only against external systems of control, but also against the inner temptation toward resignation and indifference.
