Ever since its first staging at the Weimar Court Theatre on 23 December 1893, conducted by Richard Strauss, this “sacred festival play for the nursery”, as the composer called it, has remained a favourite of international opera programming. And so Oper Bonn will present a new production of the piece on the occasion of the Humperdinck Year of 2021 (the 100th anniversary of his death). After all, large parts of the opera were created in his parents-in-law’s villa bordering on Südstadt, Poppelsdorf and Kessenich, a close link between the city of Bonn with the history of HÄNSEL UND GRETEL, even beyond its proximity to the composer’s birthplace. Momme Hinrichs (fettFilm) is in charge of the staging and set design and, together with his colleague Torge Møller, of the video. Sven Bindseil designed the costumes.
