Francis O’Connor




Francis O’Connor trained at Wimbledon School of Art.

He has designed a wide range of national and international theatre and opera productions in Ireland, the UK, U.S.A, Europe, Russia, Australia, and the Far East.

Recent opera includes : Noyes Fludde (Aldeburgh); Fortunio & Eugene Onegin (Grange Park); Entfuhrung (Garsington);  Rusalka (Nurenberg); Moses (St Gallen, Switzerland); Perichole (Garsington); Silent Night (Minnesota Opera, USA); The Adventures of Pinocchio (Moscow Childrens’ Opera); Der fliegende Holländer (Bern, Switzerland); Maria di Rohan (Buxton Festival Opera); Il Turco In Italia (Garsington Opera); Benzin (Chemnitz, Germany);  Wut  (Bern, Switzerland).

Also :  Luisa Miller, Lucrezia Borgia, Roberto Devereux (Buxton Festival Opera); Manon, The Adventures of Pinocchio (Opera North, Oper Chemnitz  (Faust Award nomination) also Minnesota Opera); Capriccio,  Fanciulla del West, Magic Flute, Don Giovanni, South Pacific & Iolanthe (Grange Park Opera); Midsummer Night’s Dream, Mirandolina, Ariadne, Don Pasquale (Garsington Opera); La Traviata (English National Opera);  Der Vogelhändler (Komische, Berlin); Maometto II (Strasbourg); Don Pasquale (Geneva). 

A long collaboration with Druid Theatre, Galway in Ireland includes : The Silver Tassie; (Cripple of Inishmaan ; the complete Synge play cycle including Playboy of The Western World; The Beauty Queen of Leenane, and Lonesome West, both seen on Broadway. All of these were seen in Ireland, the UK, and America, winning numerous awards.

Other work in Ireland includes : Mrs Warren’s Profession & My Cousin Rachel (Gate, Dublin); also The Shaugraun, Playboy of the Western World, Iphigenia, Big Maggie, The Colleen Bawn (Abbey, Dublin). 

Recent UK theatre includes : Dark Road  (Edinburgh); High Society (national tour); Cat on a Hot Tin Roof  (Leeds); The Guid Sister (National Theatre of Scotland/ Edinburgh); Loserville (Leeds & London);

Previously : Written on the Heart (Royal Shakespeare Company, Stratford & London); The Secret Garden (Edinburgh / Toronto); Equivocation (Manhattan Theatre Club); Two Men of Florence (Boston) - won the Norton Award for Best Design; Taming of the Shrew, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Loves Labours Lost (Royal Shakespeare Company, Stratford & London).

Also : The Deep Blue Sea (London & national tour); Translations (Princeton & New York); Arthur Miller’s Mr Peter’s Connections (New York).
